EThekwini Municipality Mayor, Cllr Zandile Gumede delivered the State of the City Address (SOCA) on 31 May 2018 at the Durban City Hall. The R45.8 billion budget for the 2018/19 financial year comes at the time when Durban has a huge number of ongoing projects aimed at uplifting SMMEs, create stable jobs and improve the wellbeing of the society as a whole.
Gumede cited that there are about 25 catalytic projects that city continues to use in order to attract big businesses and make Durban an investment destination.
“The R300 million Beachfront promenade extension is a catalyst to the R35 billion Point Waterfront development to be undertaken in three phases over the five to ten years. This project will unlock R35 billion annual rates revenue, 11 000 jobs and about 7000 permanent jobs” said Gumede before adding that a key project is ‘Go Durban’ which will provide people with a cheaper, greener, more reliable and faster means of transport.
Other projects include the completion of the Cornubia development which will create 48 000 permanent jobs, the R65.5 billion Illovu Auto Supplier Park which will create 6 00 jobs during construction and 2600 jobs after completion, the Clairwood logistics park and extensions in areas such as Suncoast Casino and Umhlanga to mention a few.
Gumede further stated that Youth Development remains a priority for the Municipality, citing that to-date, more than 10 000 youth have been assisted through internships as artisans and plumbers, graduate work experience, learnerships and undergraduate programmes.
Furthermore, the Municipality also recently hosted a successful career EXPO to address the issue of youth unemployment, close to 17 000 young people attended.
