According to Statistics S.A from 2016 to 2917 the Domestic Tourism Industry has over went a major shift.

There has been a huge amount of increase in Domestic tourism as the number of day trips as compared to night trips. Travellers are travelling more but they are significantly spending less on their trips. According to a survey conducted by the Domestic Tourism Survey ( DTS) in 2017, the number of day trips increased from 39.4 million in 2016 to 48 million in 2017.

Overnight trips are still growing significantly as well but they have had a smaller increase from 2016 to 2017. With of 43 million to 44.4 million . statistics S.A. says that this decrease has been caused by spending more money on food, beverages, recreation, accommodation, culture and also shopping.

Travellers usually go to trips commonly for taking overnight trips to visit family members and friends and not making use of paid accommodation which decreases the amount of money spent on hotels, guest houses, B&B’S.

However the money spent on overnight trips has decreased from both 2016 to 2017. Mostly day trips are for shopping but it’s not always the biggest shopping malls in South Africa that gain in terms of retail. Shopping is one of the reasons why people travel from provinces to provinces. From Northern Cape, Limpompo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.

Most tourists travel to the Western Cape for leisure purposes, visiting family or friends and also to see popular destinations. In 2016 and 2017 Gauteng and Western Cape were the most popular destination for day travellers. Those for overnight trips preferred Limpompo .

Mostly tourists spend up to one week on their destination for overnight trips. Staying with friends and relatives was the most popular for KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape. Also taxis were the most popular mode of transport with travellers taking a maximum of ten trips daily.

In South Africa tourism has the potential to make a function be well known hence creating a profit for the country economically but tourists spending less leads to less money being contributed to the economy and also to the country itself. Tourism is  one of the industries that contribute that contribute to economic growth and tourism is the future.
